Building an inclusive world

Birla Carbon was one of the first Group businesses to get a foothold in Africa. Established in Alexandria in 1993 as Alexandria Carbon Black, Birla Carbon has ensured that its growth ambitions are married to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over the years, Birla Carbon in Egypt has worked with local groups and associations to address their most pressing challenges. This has created an enduring bond with people, enhancing Birla Carbon's resilience to external changes.

According to various reports, Egypt has a large population of persons with disabilities. To enable them to enjoy the same fundamental human rights as everyone else, including the right to education, employment, healthcare, and full participation in the community, Birla Carbon has undertaken various initiatives.

As part of its mission to build an inclusive world, Birla Carbon hosts workshops to build awareness and promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society.

Birla Carbon has also created a room equipped with special tools to alert, arouse and stimulate all the senses of children who have autism and other related delays in the development of cognitive and sensory aspects while interacting with their surrounding environment.

It has also inaugurated three classes in an orphanage for people with intellectual disabilities. These classes provide distinguished healthcare facilities to 20 residents. It also donated tools for psychometric assessment and measurement to these institutions, which are used to test for various disabilities and help design intervention and rehabilitation programmes.

The orphanage now has a psychomotor therapy class, which uses movement and play activities to help children with certain disabilities develop skills and cognitive abilities specific to their needs. In addition, 16 women have been trained to teach persons with disabilities and aid teachers at the institution.

Using art for therapy and skilling to instil self-confidence in these students, Birla Carbon has also devoted a class where persons with disabilities can learn simple and safe professional and vocational skills.

Through these initiatives, Birla Carbon perseveres to 'Share its Strength' and continue creating an enduring bond with the people of Egypt.
